Prepositions can be tricky to learn as they can be used with such a range of meanings. In this post I am going to introduce some common ‘adjective + preposition’ combinations.

prepositions - 前置詞

adjective - 形容詞

So, let’s get right down to business. First, I will give the standard form, then an explanation of the meaning in Japanese, then an example, and a natural (ie.free) translation of the example.

OF :

frightened/scared/afraid of … = 何かが怖い（と思う）こと

• Are you afraid of spiders?
• あなたは、クモが怖いですか？

independent of … = 何か・誰かから独立している様子

• He got a job so he could be independent of his parents.
• 彼は、両親に頼らなくて済むように、就職した。

typical of … = （誰か）らしい

• That’s typical of him.
• あいつらしいよ。

WITH :

angry with … for doing … = 誰かが何かをしたため、怒っている様子

• I’m angry with her for lying to me.
• 私は、彼女に嘘をつかれて、怒っています。

blue with cold = 寒くて顔色が青い

disappointed with … = 期待されている人が失敗などして、がっかりさせられる。

• My father is disappointed with me.
• 父親は、僕のことで失望している。

ill with … = （病気）にかかっている

• He is ill with the flu.
• 彼は、インフルエンザにかかっている。

impressed with … = 感動させられた・感銘を受けた様子

• I’m very impressed with your effort.
• あなたの努力を見て、大変感動しました・感銘を受けました
• あなたの努力はたいしたものです。

pleased with … = 誰かの仕事や言動を見て、喜ぶ様子

• He’s very pleased with your work.
• 彼は、あなたの仕事を見て、喜んでいるよ。

ABOUT :

angry about … = 何かをもって、怒っている様子

• What are you so angry about?
• 君は、なんでそんなに怒っているのですか？

anxious about … = 何かの事を心配している様子

• I’m getting anxious about money.
• お金の事が気になっています。

disappointed about … = 何かが予定通りやうまく行かないため、がっかりさせられること

• You must be pretty disappointed about your exam result.
• あなたは、試験の結果を見て、がっかりしているんじゃない？

pleased about … = 何かがあって、喜ぶこと

• I wasn’t very pleased about my test result.
• 私は、試験の結果を見て、あまり喜べなかった。

sorry about … = 何かを気の毒に思う・かわいそうに思う

• I’m very sorry to hear about your mother’s illness.
• お母さんがご病気だそうで、お気の毒ですね。お大切に。

FOR :

anxious for … = 何かが欲しくて、落ち着けない様子

• We are all anxious for an end to the fighting.
• 私たちは皆、争いが終わるのを願っています。

responsible for … = 何かの責任を持っている・何かを担当している

• You’re responsible for cleaning the bathroom this week.
• 今週は、あなたが、お風呂の掃除を担当する番だよ。

sorry for … = 何かがすまないと思う・何かを後悔している様子

• I’m sorry for breaking the window.
• 窓を壊してしまってごめんなさい。

sorry for … = 誰かをかわいそうに思う

• I feel sorry for him being dumped like that.
• 彼がああいうふうに振られてしまうとは、かわいそうだと思う。

TO :

anxious to … = 何かをしたいこと

• She’s anxious to find a better job.
• 彼女は、もっと良い仕事を見つけたくて（落ち着けないのだ）

kind to … = （誰かに対して）親切

• She was always very kind to me.
• 彼女は、いつも私に対して親切だった。

married to … = 誰かと結婚している

• She is married to an Italian.
• 彼女は、イタリア人と結婚している。

nice to … = 誰かに対して優しい

• She is always very nice to the children.
• 彼女はいつも子どもたちに優しい。

rude to … = 誰かに対して無礼なことを言う・失礼な行動をする

• He’s so rude to his parents.
• 彼は両親にすごく無礼なことを言う。

AT :

bad at … = 何かが下手

• I’m really bad at tennis.
• 私は、テニスが本当に下手ですよ。

clever at … = 何かが、頭のいい人のように、出来る

• I’m not very clever at maths.
• 数学はあまり得意じゃない。

good at … = 何かが上手

• Are you any good at tennis?
• テニスは上手ですか？

ON :

dependent on … = 誰かに頼っている

• He doesn’t want to be dependent on his parents.
• 彼は、両親に頼りたくないのです。

BY :

impressed by … = 上の「impressed with」と同じ

shocked by … = 何かにショックを受ける・びっくりする

• She was really shocked by his behaviour.
• 彼女は、彼の振る舞いにすごいショックを受けた。

surprised by … = 何かを見て･聞いて・感覚してびっくりする

• Everybody was surprised by the beautiful weather.
• すごくいい天気だったので、皆びっくりしていた。
