The Problem with Religion

This is an important topic for me, for a number of reasons, not least that religion seems to be one of the main causes of people killing each other in this day and age. One of the most controversial books published in the UK last year was ‘The God Delusion’, written by an Oxford scientist, whose aim is to debunk the myth that having faith in a religion is a good thing. It’s a fascinating, humane and thoughtful book.

About the same time as the book was released, a TV documentary was also aired, in which the author travels around the world talking to people of faith about their beliefs, and about the theory of evolution, of which he is a vocal champion. Those interested in this topic will find the documentary shocking and disturbing - the bigotry and closed-mindedness of believers of all different religions is laid bare.

I have nothing particular to add to what you can see and hear in the documentary, so I shall just give you the links and invite you to enjoy. Each episode is about 10 minutes long. The links will open in a new window and link to Google’s Youtube video service.

The book and the two documentaries are making big waves in UK society. You can practise your English and find out about one of the issues that divides societies around the world but probably leaves Japanese people feeling flummoxed!
