In this post I want to introduce a special use of the verb ’see’.

We use ’see if’ to mean ‘find out if’, as in the following example :

• Does he want coffee?
• 彼は、コーヒーが欲しいですか？
• Can you see if he wants coffee?
• 彼がコーヒーが欲しいかどうか聞いてくれますか？

You can also use ’see’ with question words like ‘what’, as in the following example :

• What does he want?
• 彼は何が欲しいか？（何を求めているか）
• Can you see what he wants?
• 彼が何が欲しいか聞いてくれますか？
• Let me see what he wants.
• 彼が何を求めているのかを聞かせてください。（「聞いてみるからちょっと待ってね」という感じ）

In these sentences, ’see’ is used with the meaning ‘find out by asking’. ‘See’ can also be used with ‘can’ to mean ‘try to do something’, as in the following examples :

• See if you can lift it!
• 持ち上げることが出来るかどうか試してみて！
• I’ll see if I can get a day off work.
• 1日休み取れるかどうかやってみます。
• I wanted to see if I could do it by myself.
• 自分一人で出来るかどうかを試してみたかった。

‘See’ with these special meanings can only be used in the present tense.
