Phrasal Verbs - Type 3

This time we are going to look at Type 3 phrasal verbs. These are phrasal verbs which take an object. The object always goes after the preposition, never between the verb and preposition.

Here are some examples of Type 3 phrasal verbs :

look after / look into / bump into / run into / break into / look for / do without

And here are some example sentences using these verbs :

  • We usually get a babysitter to look after the children.(面倒を見る・世話をする)
  • The police are looking into the cause of the accident.(調べる)
  • Guess who I bumped into / ran into this morning!(偶然にあう)
  • Someone broke into my car and stole my handbag.(泥棒みたいに強いて入る)
  • I’m looking for somewhere I can change money.(探す)
  • This book has been very useful for me - I could never have done without it.(~なしに成功する・~なしにできる)

Use one of the verbs above to complete the following sentences and listen to the audio to check :

  1. We are not sure yet what caused the defect, but of course we are going to _____ it.
  2. Apparently the burglars ______ the house during the night. They got in through an open window.
  3. I _____ a friend in the street so we went for coffee together.
  4. She seems to enjoy _______ the children.
  5. We never use this table, it’s just in the way. Don’t you think we can ______ it?
