Phrasal Verbs - Type 4

This is the last post in this series about phrasal verbs. This time we will be looking at Type 4 phrasal verbs.

Type 4 phrasal verbs have two prepositions and the object always goes after both prepositions. Here are the verbs we are going to look at this time :

get on with / go down with - come down with / get round to / catch up with

date back to / go on about / look forward to / look up to

First of all, here are some example sentences demonstrating the meaning of these verbs:

  • Do you get on with your mother-in-law? (仲がいいですか?)
  • I think I am coming down with something. (風邪やインフルエンザみたいな病気にかかり始まっている)
  • OK. I’ll try and get round to it as soon as possible. (忙しくて色々な仕事があって、順位があって、結局それに手がまわる・する機会を見いだす)
  • I managed to catch up with a few friends while I was back in the UK. (友だちに追いつく、要するに、会って、話して、友達のニュースを聞く)
  • The castle dates back to the 13th century. (さかのぼる)
  • He’s always going on about football. (つまらなくなるほどサッカーの話を長引いてしてしまう)
  • [audio]pv3_ex6.mp3]
  • After 6 months away, she was looking forward to seeing her family again. (楽しみにしていた)
  • I really look up to him. (尊敬する)

So, now complete these sentences with a suitable phrasal verb from the list above, then listen to the audio to check your ideas.

  1. He speaks such strange English I am never quite sure what he is ___________.
  2. I think I’m __________ a cold.
  3. The temple __________ the 12th century.
  4. He’s a talented talker - the other salesmen really ________ him.
  5. I’m sorry but I’m up to my ears in work this morning - I might be able to ________ it after lunch.
  6. Work goes much better if you can __________ your colleagues.

That concludes this series on phrasal verbs, though I will try to introduce more of them in my posts in the future.
