このポストでは、「量」を示す言葉を紹介します。

(1) very few / very little / hardly any

これらの表現は、「とても少ない」とか「ほとんどない」とかと言う意味になります。

「Very few」は、数えられる名詞と一緒に使います。数えられる名詞というのは、複数形がある名詞をさす。例えば、「donut」の複数形は、「donuts」ですから、「very few donuts」と言って、「少ない数のドーナツ」という事になります。

「Very little」は、数えられない名詞と一緒に使います。数えられない名詞というのは、複数形がないか、ほとんど単数形しか使われない名詞をさす。例えば、「money」は、複数形があるけど、ほとんど使われません。「One money」とか「two moneys」などと言いませんので、これは数えられない名詞です。（お金を数えたい時は、 「3 dollars」とか「1000 yen」とかと通貨を言います）。ですから、「very little money」は、「とても少ない量のお金」という事になります。

「Hardly any」は、数えられるか数えられない名詞の両方と使えますから、便利です。

例文：

• There were very few people at the supermarket. （「people」は、「person」という数えられる名詞の複数形です）
• He has very little free time. （「time」は、数えられない名詞です）
• There is hardly any food in the fridge. （「food」は数えられない名詞です）
• There are hardly any shops near here. （「shops」は、「shop」という数えられる名詞の複数形です）

訳してみましょうか？

1. 私は、外国の友達がとても少ないです。 = I have … … …
2. 牛乳は少なくなっている。= There is … … …

(2) quite a few / a fair number of / quite a bit of / a fair amount of

これらの表現は、「かなりある」とか「けっこうある」という意味になります。

「Quite a few」と「a fair number of」は、数えられる名詞と一緒に使います。

「Quite a bit of」と「a fair amount of」は、数えられない名詞と一緒に使います。

例文：

• There are quite a few Brazilians in my neighbourhood.
• I know a fair number of foreigners.
• There is quite a bit of beer in the fridge.
• I bought a fair amount of beer for the party.

訳してみましょうか？

1. 公園には、子どもたちがけっこういた。There were … …
2. 時間がまだけっこうある。There is still … …

(3) quite a lot of

この表現は、「かなり・けっこうある」と「たくさんある」との間です。数えられる名詞と数えられる名詞と、どっちとでも使えます。

例文：

• There are quite a lot of flowers in my garden.
• There is quite a lot of traffic.

訳してみましょうか？

1. かなりたくさんの人々がいた。There were …
2. 英語の本をかなりたくさん持っています。I have …

これらの「quite」や「fair」を使う表現は、けっこう曖昧で、はっきりした量を示せません。

(4) a lot of / lots of / loads of / tonnes of / plenty of

これらの表現は、「たくさん」とか「たっぷり」とかという意味を持っています。数えられる名詞も数えられない名詞も一緒に使えます。

例文：

• He has a lot of work to do.
• There are a lot of beers in the fridge.
• He has lots of work to do.
• There are lots of beers in the fridge.
• There were loads of people at the festival.
• She has loads of jewellery.
• There are tonnes of foreigners in this area.
• There is tonnes of milk in the fridge.

「Plenty of」は、「たっぷりの」という意味で、「十二分」という言い方に近いです：

• There is plenty of time - we don’t need to rush.
• Everyone had plenty of ideas.

訳してみましょうか？

1. そうしたいなら、お金はたくさんいるよ。
2. 心配しないで！ビールがたっぷりありますよ。
